September 2017 Newsletter
It has been a busy last month or so with the end of the summer tournament season and the start of the Fall League season leaving little time for reflection on all the great things that have been happening within our Titan community! Hopefully, this Newsletter will help bring you all up to speed!
On a personal note, fatherhood has been a real blessing and a huge whirlwind with Baby Amalia making every day interesting and fun for Annie and I. It is truly a life-changing experience and I am looking forward to Amalia attending her first NPSA game in the very near future!
Tournament season finished with 12 Titan teams competing in the Labor Day Cup at Starfire in what proved to be a fantastic weekend of soccer and the perfect warm-up for the Fall League Season kick-off! A couple of weeks earlier, our B04 and B03 Navy teams represented our club in the NW Champions Cup at 60 Acres in Redmond. This was the very first time NPSA teams have been invited to participate in this high-level tournament which brings together the best teams from the RCL, PSPL and surrounding States. Read more about how both teams performed later in this Newsletter.
At the beginning of last month, we held our second set of College Prep nights for our players and parents led by Directors, Lee Hitchen and Erik Oman. Our College Pathway program is a recent addition to our member services and it is the most important in my opinion. We want to provide every player that comes through our club with all the information and tools they need to be successful.
Understanding the College recruitment process and what college coaches are looking for in their future players is crucial if your player is serious about playing soccer in College. Here at NPSA, we have built our College Prep program around two of the most experienced and qualified people in the State and we provide this service free of charge to our members. Learn more about what is coming next for our College Prep program later in this Newsletter.
We love baby pictures! Here is Amalia Nowland (6 weeks)
The Fall League season is now in full swing with NPSA having 35 teams in the PSPL across all age groups and genders. I have been out to multiple games so far this season and been extremely proud and impressed with the way our Titans are playing their soccer and representing our program. I look forward to attending more games over the coming weeks and I hope to see each of our 35 teams play in person over the course of the season!
I hope you all enjoy this month’s Newsletter and Let’s Go Titans!
Together Each Achieves More
NW Champions Cup Tournament Review
The B03 Navy Bellevue team and Coach Adam had an unbelievable run in this competition with great goals, awesome performances and landmark victories! It was a truly remarkable weekend for this team and our club as a whole!
The group stage started out with a tough game against the Spokane Sounders. It was hard to find the breakthrough against a resolute Sounders defense but eventually our boys did and went on to record a 2-0 victory which secured 3 valuable points.
Next up was Crossfire Premier ‘A’ team who are one of the highest ranked teams in the State. After a goalless first half, our boys dominated proceedings in the second half and scored the only goal of the game with 5 minutes remaining. The Titans closed out the game recording a 1-0 victory.
The third group game saw our boys up against a strong Westside Timbers team from Oregon and they made it a difficult game from start to finish. With chances for both teams to win the game, a 2-2 tie was a fair result in the end and maintained our Titans unbeaten run leaving us top of the group with one game to play.
That game was against PSPL rivals, Wenatchee Fire, and brought out the best performance from our boys with goals aplenty. The game ended in a 4-1 victory for Coach Adam and the team securing a place in the Champions Cup final.
After 4 tough group games over the space of 3 days, the final match against WA Rush ‘A’ team was just one hurdle too many for our B03 Navy Titans unfortunately. A tired performance from our boys resulted in the Rush taking home the trophy.
Regardless of the result in the final, the B03 Navy team can be extremely proud of the way they performed over the course of the weekend against some of the highest level of competition that the state has to offer! Way to go boys and Coach Adam!
The B04 Navy Team was honored to be part of one of the most competitive club tournaments in Washington State over the Summer. The Northwest Champions League tournament hosted teams in the 04 bracket that included the Oregon State Champions, Regional State Champions, and PSPL Superleague Champions. Coach Keenan and the boys gained some valuable experience and came away from the tournament stronger than ever, ready to take on the Washington National Premier League this Fall.
NPSA College Pathway Program Update
We held two information evenings recently. One for our fall freshmen and sophomores and the other for our juniors. Each night was tailored to the exact needs of each class, specifically what they should be doing this academic year. We also had our college prep program and shirt sponsors, Paracle, on hand to speak about finances for college and the best way to plan for future expenses. All together there was a lot of information but I am sure everyone went away understanding that they have NPSA behind them.
Our next dates will be in late January or Early February where we will offer times to meet with Erik and Lee to go over where our players are with their planning. Stay tuned for more information on date, time and venue.
If you haven't read NPSA's recent article on GoalWa, you should take time to do so. The path to college is not the same for everyone as each player has different and unique needs. Read it here.
PSPL Surf Academy Update
The PSPL Surf Academy Program is designed to promote player development within their own club structure by utilizing the clubs players and most experienced coaching staff to attend additional tournaments across the United States East & West Coast. The program is designed to give the top Elite players additional training and competitive opportunities -- and more exposure to college coaches.
This year saw around 30 NPSA players make their respective Surf Academy age group teams with 5 of the NPSA Coaching Staff involved on the Academy Staff as well. A clear statement that NPSA as a program is only getting stronger.
Over Labor Day weekend, our very own Coach Adam took his B03 and B02 Academy teams up to Surrey, BC for the SX International Cup. Included on these teams were 6 NPSA players who all made significant contributions to the teams’ success.
The B03 team, including Titan players Douglas Bono & Trent Denholm, won 3 games out of 4 over the course of the weekend with Trent captaining the team throughout.
The B02 team, including Titan players Angel Hernandez, Kai Sharp, Slone Sasouvanh & Takoda Zuelhke, won 5 games out of 5 ending with a 3-0 victory over Seattle Utd in the final. A special mention must go to Slone Sasouvanh who scored 4 goals in one game in the group stages and was the stand-out player of the weekend.
Way to represent Titans and congratulations to all the Titan players & coaches involved in the PSPL Surf Academy program this year!
NPSA GK Union Update
The NPSA GK Union is taking a big step forward with our newest addition to our community staff. Coach Nico Terentjev has been hired onto the Goalkeeper Union Coaching staff and has already participated in a few sessions with our goalkeepers. Coach Nico comes to us from Western Washington University and was also a former teammate of our Director of Goalkeeping Keegan Rogers. Alongside goalkeeping, Nico specializes in physical fitness and development. Nico is currently working as a medical scribe and will be taking the MCAT in Winter of 2018. Nico is a big addition to our staff as this allows our training programs to be even more dynamic. With our young goalkeepers continuing to grow and develop, Nico will be able to provide a new training element that helps cater to our growing goalkeepers. Nico will also be assisting with various other programs, so when you get a chance, give a warm NPSA welcome!
On another note, we would like to highlight one of our young, bright standout goalkeepers. Goalkeeper Karan Skountrianos of the B07 Navy Bellevue team has been turning a lot of heads with his performances over the last couple weeks. Our Goalkeeping Director Keegan was in attendance for both of his games and he was in awe of his abilities to keep his team in the game and make multiple world class saves throughout both games. Karan was on a whole other level and was certainly the player of the match for both games. Karan has reluctantly joined our training program and has already taken some big strides in his development with coach Keegan and coach Nico and we look forward to seeing his performances throughout the rest of the season.
NPSA Foundation Update
After the launch of the NPSA Vista Soccer Club back in the summer, the Foundation has gone from strength to strength and is gaining exposure and recognition for the great work it is doing in the local community!
Recently, the Foundation has partnered with huge organizations such as the Boys & Girls Club and Seattle Children’s Odessa Brown Clinic.
The NPSA Foundation strives to teach life skills through the game of soccer and is literally changing the face of youth soccer in this area and beyond by providing low-income families with a genuine, professionally-coached program completely free of charge.
Soccer everywhere else in the world is accessible to all regardless of financial standing. It is on us to ensure that ‘Soccer for All’ isn’t just a catchphrase but a reality!
In order to continue to serve the hundreds of families that desperately need programs like this, the Foundation needs help in the form of volunteers, donations or sponsorships from local businesses. Have a Tiny or a Junior Titan? Enrollment is always open.
Here at NPSA, we believe it is crucial to educate all young players on the basics of the game from day 1 of their soccer journey.
Learning needs to be enjoyable for all young players so we put the FUN in fundamentals!
Our Tiny and Junior Titans programs are professionally coached and designed to focus on our youngest players (4-8 years old) having fun while developing their skills and understanding of the game in a safe environment.
Each training session will consist of a short warm-up and technical training teaching each player the fundamentals of the game.
During the games, players will be encouraged to implement the skills they have been working on with guidance from the coaches.
Get your player on the right track early with the Tiny and Junior Titans!
SKLZ Academy - Technical Training Program for Serious Players
As a direct result of our ground-breaking partnership with SKLZ, we are excited to announce the launch of the SKLZ Academy that is coming this September.
This program will provide serious players with the additional technical training that they require to take their game to the next level. Using the SKLZ equipment, the sessions will offer specific SAQ (speed & agility) training, Ball Mastery education, position-specific scenarios and a variety of shooting drills that will challenge the players and help them develop all aspects of their game.
To ensure maximum development, players will be separated into groups based of their current stage of development. The groups will be Beginner, Intermediary, Advanced and Elite.
The SKLZ Academy is open to players born in 2007 through to 2001 and will be held on Sunday evenings at Robinswood Park, Bellevue. There are limited spots available.

COE – Development Academy (2010, 2009, 2008)
The Center of Excellence is re-launching this Fall with the focus on the development age groups (players born in 2010, 2009 & 2008). The training and curriculum for the younger players needs to be different in terms of content and intensity so the COE curriculum, designed by Erik Oman, is tailored specifically for these ages.
Erik Oman is the Director of the COE and brings a wealth of experience and a long list of credentials that cannot be matched in this area and beyond. His background in Child Development and knowledge of Coaching Education makes him the perfect leader for our Center of Excellence and we are very lucky to have Coach Erik in our program!
The Fall Session of the COE Dev Academy kicks-off this September 10th and will be held at Robinswood Park, Bellevue. There are limited spots available.
